Before leaving the country, make sure to request your academic certifications from your education provider or institution. These documents may be important for future opportunities. Depending on your program, certifications can include:

• Completion Letter
• Transcript of Records
• Diploma

Bank Account

It’s time to make some important decisions about your bank account. Once your student visa expires, your student banking benefits will end, and the account may start incurring monthly fees.

• If you plan to use your account for pending transactions or to receive your Superannuation refund, you can keep it open temporarily.
• Otherwise, consider closing it to avoid unnecessary charges.

Superannuation

Superannuation, often referred to as SUPER, is Australia’s retirement fund. As an international student, if you’ve worked and contributed to this fund, you can claim a refund after:

• Your visa has expired
• You’ve left Australia

Rental Agreements

If you’re renting a property, give proper notice to your landlord or property manager as required by your rental agreement.

• Ensure you’ve fulfilled all the conditions of the contract to claim your bond refund.
• Plan ahead to avoid any delays or disputes.

Mobile Plans

• Prepaid Plans: If you’re using a prepaid mobile plan, you don’t need to take any additional steps.
• Postpaid/Contract Plans: Visit your service provider to settle any outstanding bills and finalise your contract.

Health Insurance

If you’re leaving before your student visa ends, you can request a refund for the unused portion of your Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC).

• Contact your insurance provider and provide evidence of your departure and visa cancellation to process the refund, we will assist you in this step.

Taxation

This is one of the most important steps before leaving.

• You may be entitled to a tax refund for the income tax you’ve paid while working in Australia.
• Alternatively, if you owe taxes, ensure compliance with Australian tax laws before departing.
